Why does the Park want to preserve the mouflon but keep the wolf out?
De Hoge Veluwe states that, although the wolf is a native species, it undermines conservation goals by killing the mouflon, whose grazing is essential for maintaining open heath and drifting-sand habitats. Therefore the Park advocates controlled wolf management and wants to keep wolves out while preserving the mouflon population.
What difference would it make if the mouflon were to disappear from De Hoge Veluwe?
Without mouflon grazing, open areas such as drifting sands and nutrient-poor heathlands would quickly turn into pine forest, threatening the protected landscapes and the plant and animal species that depend on them. Maintaining these areas by manual tree removal would be costly, labour-intensive and less effective than the mouflon’s natural grazing.
Where can I learn more about the mouflon situation in the Park?
Visit the Museonder in De Hoge Veluwe, where the temporary exhibition "Save the Mouflon" explains the mouflon’s role, current threats and conservation measures.
What can I do to help protect the mouflon and vulnerable areas in De Hoge Veluwe?
You can sign the "Save the Mouflon" petition supporting controlled wolf management or become a member of the Mouflon Association to back ongoing conservation efforts.
